Dr. Oz Three Day Detox

I'm not much of a believer in the cleanse fad as a way of "detoxing". I'm a science girl and I have seen no science that proves any kind of cleanse takes care of that better than the body takes care of that itself. I do want to jump start a little weight loss though...I have gained 15-20 pounds in the last couple of years and with menopause probably knocking on my door, I figure I better get a handle on this now before it gets out of control. Maybe three days of strictly regimented eating (drinking, I should say) of pureed healthy stuff might knock off a few pounds and motivate me. I tend to eat fairly healthy, I don't eat much fast food or processed crap but I do like to cook and bake so I know I eat too much. Definitely too much meat, cheese and grain and not enough veg.

I've read some complaints about how expensive it is to undertake this little experiment, and it's true it ain't cheap. I did the shopping yesterday and did make a few budget based substitutions. No almond butter, smallest jar I could find was $7.00 so I'll be substituting natural peanut butter that I already have on hand for that. Coconut oil at $10.00/jar, no thanks...extra virgin olive oil instead. Discovered that frozen raspberries and pineapple are a fraction the price of fresh, and luckily fresh blueberries were on sale. I already had vitamins, probiotic and omega 3 supplements sitting around idle so that saved me some money too.

As I type this I am having the dreaded lunch drink...everything I've read says it is absolutely disgusting, but weirdly I kind of like it. It definitely has a grassy taste to it but with the pineapple and lime I found it bright and drinkable. It certainly gave my blender a workout. I peeled and seeded the cukes and juiced the lime, I know some people say they threw them in whole but blecch. The breakfast drink which most people seem to like better was meh. I figured with banana and raspberry as a base it couldn't be too bad, but spinach really doesn't compliment those fruits the way kale seems to complement the pineapple, and the color and texture were quite unappealing. My husband got a little queasy just looking at it, and seemed relieved to be heading out of town for a few days! It was also kind of lukewarm, will definitely be adding ice to it next time.

I feel pretty good so far...not hungry at all. I was worried about caffeine withdrawal but I had gradually cut back on coffee the last few days and so far the green tea seems to be caffeine enough for me. Honestly I think the caffeine and alcohol will be toughest on me...I like to have a beer or glass of wine or two most nights...but three days should be manageable.
